During his life, David has been asked to advise many who were not able to appreciate why life was treating them in a way that they did not understand. Although not specifically trained as a professional ‘counsellor’, and not associated with any media ‘counselling experts’, David has given helpful advice to large numbers of people, of all ages, during the last half-century. This is because he has based his advice on that given in the Holy Scriptures, and particularly on the recorded life and sayings of the Saviour. His book ‘Watching the Saviour at Work’ explains this style of counselling, and gives illustrations.
In large numbers, people have been writing to David since he was a
teenager, explaining their problems, and asking for prayer. His replies, covering more than sixty years, are fascinating to read. He has been a kind of ‘personal chaplain’ to thousands, without ever meeting them. His letters can be long, and may not always carry the kind of answer which was anticipated. He has never been afraid to be honest with those who hoped for an answer which suited them better. David’s letters will never be published, but many people say that they have kept them safe, in order to read them often!
Despite a busy life, and a family of three children (plus six grandchildren), David has found time to care for those who needed help. In his life, he has been a ‘Good Samaritan’ to dozens of people. Some were brought into his home, in a dying condition for personal care, whilst others have been assisted in their own homes. It is true that many have been elderly, but many young people have also received his care.
Whilst leading a church, writing books, sending out parcels of literature, corresponding with needy folk, assisting immigrants, travelling overseas, leading tours, and writing columns, he has still found time to care for one after another, with (amazingly) daily visits.
